The Awesomeness of Aquaponics

April 21, 2010

Today I’d like to feature another wonderful blog post from our AquaponicsCommunity.com group. This one is by Jessica Rohr from Honolulu, Hawaii who writes a blog at www.ieathi.com. When I asked her if she would mind if I featured her post in Aquaponic Gardening Blog her response was “To me they are just simple little thoughts that can travel where ever they please”.

I first learned about aquaponics through Glen Martinez at Olomana Gardening in Waimanalo. I was there for a free raised bed gardening class but ended up getting an earful about how much better aquaponics is. The system seemed unfamiliar, complicated and unnecessary to me and I instantly wrote it off.

The women I had carpooled with slightly convinced me of its benefits but not enough for me to even recall being interested. All I remember was thinking how cute it was that the elders at her retirement fish for tilapia in their aquaponics pond as an activity. I tried bringing it up in gardening conversation a few times and no one really knew about it or cared to know. It’s funny now how obsessed I am becoming considering how anti I was.

Now times like tonight happen, where I am trying to sell someone on the awesomeness of aquaponics and I get completely rejected. If I try to tell a friend it is the future of food they practically laugh at me. And they have so many skeptical remarks about the truth of my statements. I might as well be a Jehovah Witness! Ha.

I trust that as knowledge spreads and people become more familiar they will see me as less of a latest tech gadget freak and more of a prophet. Until then I am finding comfort in the intelligent community surrounding aquaponics (that means you guys.) Thank you friends!
